Phone limits for betting: app timers, Screen Time and a separate UPI account
Many betting sites give you few limit tools. Your phone gives you plenty: daily timers, blocked addresses, bedtime mode and a payment account that can only lose so much.
If a betting site does not give you a deposit limit, your phone can. Android's Digital Wellbeing and the iPhone's Screen Time let you cap how long a browser or app stays open each day, block a specific website, and silence everything at night. Pair that with a small, separate bank account for UPI, and you have limits that work no matter which site you use.
Each setting takes a few minutes. The harder part is choosing the numbers before you need them.
Choose your numbers while you are calm
A limit made after a loss is a negotiation. A limit made on a quiet Sunday is a rule. Write down three numbers:
- Money per month: an amount you can lose without touching rent, fees, EMI or food. Say ₹2,000, which is ₹500 a week.
- Time per day: for example 30 minutes, or none at all on weekdays.
- Stop time: no betting after 11 p.m., when tired decisions cost the most.
Then set the phone to enforce them, so willpower is not the only thing standing between you and another deposit.
Android: Digital Wellbeing app timers
On most Android phones the path is Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. Samsung, Xiaomi and others may name it slightly differently, so search Settings for "Digital Wellbeing" or "Screen time" if you cannot see it.
- Open the Dashboard and find the browser you bet in, usually Chrome, or the shortcut you use.
- Tap the hourglass or App timer and set the daily minutes.
- When the time runs out, the app greys out until midnight.
- Turn on Bedtime mode with your stop time. The screen goes grey and notifications go quiet.
A timer on the whole of Chrome also limits your news and searches, which some people find too blunt. In that case, use Chrome only for everyday browsing and keep all betting in one separate browser that carries a strict timer. The split makes the limit precise.
iPhone: Screen Time limits and blocked addresses
On an iPhone, open Settings → Screen Time and turn it on if it is off. Then:
- Tap App Limits → Add Limit, choose Safari or the home-screen shortcut, and set the daily time.
- Tap Downtime and schedule the hours when only the apps you pick are available.
- To block a betting site completely during a break, go to Content & Privacy Restrictions, open the web content settings, choose Limit Adult Websites and add the site's address under Never Allow.
- Set a Screen Time passcode and let a family member choose it, so you cannot lift the limit at midnight.
That last step is what turns a setting into a real limit. A passcode you know yourself is a speed bump; a passcode someone else holds is a wall.
A separate UPI account that can only lose so much
Time limits do nothing if every deposit can reach your salary. The most effective money limit we know is structural: open or reuse a basic savings account with a small balance, link only that account to the UPI app you use for betting, and keep your main account on a different UPI app or none at all.
Every Monday, move the week's ₹500 into it. When it is empty, there is nothing to deposit until next Monday. No credit card or credit line should be linked to that UPI app.
Two more habits help. Read the payee name every time before you approve, because sites change payment receivers and fraud copies them. And look at your monthly statement for the betting account in full, adding the deposits honestly rather than guessing.
Breaks: the phone side of a cooling-off period
Many operators offer a cooling-off period or self-exclusion inside the account or through support. Use it if you need a break, and back it up on the phone:
- Remove the home-screen shortcut and clear the site from your browser history and saved passwords.
- Add the address to the iPhone Never Allow list, or give the betting browser a one-minute timer on Android.
- Mute or leave Telegram and WhatsApp groups that share tips, odds or "signals".
- Turn off email and SMS promotions from the operator through the unsubscribe link.
When the break ends, decide calmly whether to come back at all, and if so, with the same limits as before rather than looser ones.
When limits keep slipping
If you keep changing the timers, borrowing to deposit, or hiding the spending, the problem has outgrown phone settings. That is common and nothing to be ashamed of. The free national Tele-MANAS line, 14416 or 1-800-891-4416, is staffed day and night and can talk through gambling stress in many Indian languages. A family member can call on your behalf too.
Over-18s only. Betting is paid entertainment with a real chance of losing, and the best limit is the one you set before you open the site.
